Hackathon 6–7 August
Wikimania Hackathon 2014 will take place in 6–7 August, 2014, beginning as a pre-conference two days before the main Wikimania programme starts.
Quick links:
Everyone is welcome to the Hackathon days—when you come to register, you should choose a 5 day ticket. To help us plan, if you're interested it would help if you added yourself to the list below. It should be noted that we are currently sold out for the hackathon, but we have created a waiting list.
What's a hackathon?
Hackathon ("Hacking days")—sometimes called DevCamp—have been held previously at Wikimania 2005 (Frankfurt), 2006 (Boston), 2007 (Taipei), 2009 (Buenos Aires), 2011 (Haifa), 2012 (Washington DC), 2013 (Hong Kong), and various other Hackathons, DevCamps, and developer meetings.
Interested technologists and hackers of all backgrounds are welcome at the Wikimania Hackathon. Prior experience with the MediaWiki software is not required. Translators with a linguistic background who can help improve language support for Wikimedia technology projects are also needed.

Open developer discussions
The discussion area of the Hackathon space will be available for open discussions at points during the pre-conference Hackathon and throughout Wikimania.
Please utilize this space to advertise any discussions you would like to facilitate and to reserve the space. A schedule will be created closer to Wikimania based on initial submissions. You do not need to follow a specific scheduling format (in other words—you may start at anytime you would like). However, please do not reserve more than 60 minutes to allow others to utilize the space as well. You may keep the space longer if no one else has reserved or shows up to utilize the space. Reserving the space is not required, but preference will be given to discussions that reserved the space.
- Example discussion
- Wednesday, August 6th
- 05:00–06:00
- Discussion on the formation of the example early-bird developer society
- Talk page WikiProject discussion.
- Open to date and time, during Hackathon or later
- Presentation of some facts about WikiProject templates and the resulting class and importance statistics, and how the results can be improved. Sign up below if you are interested, and then a meetup time and place can be picked.Dthomsen8 (talk) 17:06, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Topics
Please add sessions you are interested in leading or discussions you are interested in having. If you are interested in participating in a sprint, meeting or workshop that is already listed please add your user name below the proposal so that we know which topics are generating the most interest.

Europeana Task Force meeting
A Europeana Task Force has been set up to reinforce the links between the Europeana network of galleries, libraries, archives and museums and the Wikimedia projects. This task force will meet on thursday Aug. 7th at 16.00 at Frobisher 3. Attendance is by invite only. Hosted by 85jesse.
Sprints
Regular contributors plus some newcomers hack together with a shared goal.
i18n/L10n
Hack on and discuss open bugs on the Translate extension and other i18n/L10n related extensions (Babel, CLDR, ContentTranslation, TranslationNotifications, ...). Would love to be able to have a dedicated table/room for this for the length of the hackathon. I don't think it'll be hard to staff this thing for the full length.

GWToolset
If you have an interest in helping develop a MediaWiki extension that enables GLAMs to get their digital content online on Commons, or an interest in developing a MediaWiki extension, stop by and see what we’re doing and how you might get involved as we work on improving the GWToolset extension and resolving current bugs. We will plan a schedule for the sprint at the hackathon at the opening in the Garden room on the 6th.
If you are interested in how to use GWToolset in order to upload a batch contribution to Commons, please consider attending the Using GWToolset workshop scheduled for Sunday, August 10th from 12:30-13:00 and review the end user documentation available on the MediaWiki site. You can also chat with Dan-nl during the conference or possibly with one of the current GWToolset users.

- Should be do-able, though possibly not with GWT as you'll have to batch convert mp3 to ogg format (mp3 is not an open standard), meaning that the files will end up being loaded from local copies rather than on-line. Compare with the conversions I did at Commons:User:Fæ/Projects/Xeno-canto 21:26, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Servicing MediaWiki: The new REST content & storage APIs, and services like Parsoid powering it
A deep-dive into the upcoming REST content API & the distributed back-end services powering it. We'll present the design and implementation work done so far, and how you can use it already in your projects. Looking forward, we'll discuss issues, use cases & possible solutions. We'll also discuss how this will integrate with Parsoid to provide a convenient and fast content API, and will demo several applications that already take advantage of the simple Parsoid API available so far.

MediaWiki-Vagrant Bootcamp
Introduction to extending MediaWiki-Vagrant to provision new extensions and wiki configuration. We'll do a really quick high level look at what Vagrant is and how MediaWiki-Vagrant uses and extends it. Then we'll learn just enough Puppet to understand what "roles" are and how to use them to configure your MediaWiki-Vagrant instance. Participants will then get hands on by creating roles to install and configure extensions used on Commons that are not yet available in MediaWiki-Vagrant.

Start hacking Wikidata via its API
A very basic introduction on how editing via the MediaWiki API works in general, focused on editing Wikidata. We will dig into Wikibase's (JSON) data model and fiddle with it's bits. Target audience: People who know how to code (examples will be in PHP) but never used the API. Having a PHP environment or tool labs account ready is recommended.

Upload Wizard Roundtable
The WMF multimedia team will host a roundtable discussion about upgrading the Upload Wizard, to make it easier to contribute media files on Wikimedia Commons and related sites. This is our main user-facing project this year: we plan to fix a lot of bugs, refactor the code and implement new features to improve our upload pipeline. We are looking for community guidance on which bugs to focus on right away -- and would appreciate feedback on long-term goals for feature development (see first design mockups). Hope to see you then! (see also our other multimedia sessions). (Slides | Etherpad)

Developer Discussion
People often want to run MediaWiki for their own site. These wikis vary in size and scope from a personal wiki to a tool for corporate knowledge management.
Developers often focus their efforts on these non-WMF wikis, but because the WMF has a number of developers on staff to maintain MediaWiki for Wikipedia and its sister sites, these "third party" developers have to coordinate their work with WMF's staff developers.
This session will serve as a discussion between a panel of WMF developers and any questions that third party developers may have. We hope to continue hosting this sort of dialog between developers to increase communication and transparency for all.
Time: Wed. Aug. 6 @ 16:00 GMT (90 min., place TBD)

API Roadmap
Brad Jorsch (anomie) would like to discuss mw:Requests for comment/API roadmap with anyone interested, with a particular focus on whether any of the suggested changes need revision or if any other changes should be included. We should especially discuss these big items:
- Deprecation process: what should the "suitable timeframe" be?
- Remove obsolete output formats: removing txt, yaml, and a few others
- JSON output as default
- Changes to JSON output format, e.g., UTF-8 default, true instead of empty string for boolean
- Removing links in pretty-printed HTML formats
- Removing "possible errors" & "props" from action=paraminfo
- HTMLizing & localizing action=help (please speak up if you're using action=help from a client)
- A complete and utter overhaul of token handling
- Removing long-deprecated parameters, e.g., "title", "watch", & others
- Deprecating prop=imageinfo, rewriting from scratch as prop=fileinfo

Design Research Participation
Today (Thursday, August 7, we will be in the Conservatory)
Invite anyone to participate in qualitative design research to inform and iterate Wikipedia design concepts.
Goal is to gather feedback and observations from community members new and old, on Wikipedia design concepts, and to share design research methodologies and practices with anyone interested. We will have a few of our test devices set up ready to have people try out some concepts including: Visual Editor, Task Suggestions, Flow, Winter, Wikipedia moble web and mobile apps. You can also participate using your own device. If you want to participate in research in the future, go here to opt in: wikimedia.org/research

- I'm very interested in spell checking, basically for the Arabic langauge, but my scripts use pywikipedia. If you have expereince in spell checking and/or natual lanauge processing, let's do something cool. I also translate from English to Arabic. Ah, and one more thing, data analysis, especially what's rated to page views and edits, is something I'm interested in working on. (email me)--OsamaK (talk) 11:43, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

- Bawolff - interested in things. All sorts of things. "Gamification" ideas that people have been throwing about recently sounds like an interesting thing to look at.
