Education Pre-Conference/Educator training

Calling educators from around the world who are interested in using Wikipedia as a teaching tool in your classroom: You're invited to attend an educator training session on Thursday, 7 August from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the Education Pre-Conference at Wikimania 2014. Bring your laptop and an assignment you want to integrate Wikipedia editing into, and we'll help you get there.

Educators who teach any level from any country are encouraged to attend this training to learn how to incorporate Wikipedia into their classes.

The educator training is designed to be flexible to meet the needs of instructors of all levels: primary, secondary, and higher education. You're invited to attend whether you're a Wikipedia newbie or if you've been editing for several years; the only requirement is that you're interested in incorporating Wikipedia or another Wikimedia project into your students' curriculum.

What we'll do

From 10 a.m. to noon, we'll delve into the basics of Wikipedia editing. If you've never clicked the edit button, or if you're a bit rusty, this session will teach you what you need to know about contributing, from important policies to technical how-to. We'll synthesize thousands of words of Wikipedia help pages into a two-hour crash course in Wikipedia editing, with the goal that you'll be able to know the basics by the time we break for lunch.

After lunch, we'll delve specifically into using Wikipedia as a teaching tool in your class. If you're an experienced editor who is just interested in assignment design, you're welcome to join us at this point in the training. Based on our experience working with educators to incorporate Wikipedia editing into curricula for more than four years, we'll describe best practices, talk about learning objectives, and provide some case studies of assignments that have gone well — and ones that haven't, so you avoid common pitfalls! Bring a written description of typical assignment you give your students — an assignment in which students write a research paper, analyze sources, take photographs, create a video, or some other exercise. We'll do a hands-on workshop on how to incorporate Wikipedia editing into it.

Our goals are that you'll walk out of this training confident with Wikipedia editing and ready to use Wikipedia in your next class.
