"Let's improve Wikipedia together, by making it easier for new and experienced users to collaborate productively."

About me

I work in the Wikimedia Foundation's product group, where I help develop new software tools and practices for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites. (This is my work account, my personal account is here.)

Before joining the Wikimedia movement, I founded and led NewsTrust.net, a nonprofit social news network, which was acquired by the Poynter Institute in 2012. Our news literacy tools help people find good journalism online, in order to make more informed decisions as citizens.

My previous ventures include: Handtap, a wireless content provider; shockwave.com, a web entertainment site at Macromedia; Apple Computer's Multimedia Lab, a research and development group; and Videowest, a producer of rock journalism. Read more about my career on LinkedIn.

I am the producer of "Hackers", a documentary about the heroes of the computer revolution -- and the 'hacker ethic' which made the Wikimedia movement possible. I was also elected an Ashoka Fellow for my work as social entrepreneur -- and earned four patents for my interactive TV work at Apple.

My work has been widely covered by the mainstream and independent press, including the BBC, Atlantic Monthly, the Guardian, Huffington Post, Le Monde, Newsweek, the New York Times, Scientific American, Time, the Washington Post, Wired and many more.

I look forward to collaborating with you and other Wikipedians!

My work

My role at the foundation is to coach our teams to build new tools and practices for Wikipedia and Wikimedia sites. In all our projects, we strive to encourage collaborations between new and experienced users -- so they can learn from each other and improve Wikipedia together.

Here are some of the projects I managed in my first two years at the Foundation:

Multimedia Vision 2016

How will we use multimedia on our sites in three years?

Our Multimedia team was formed to provide a richer experience and support more media contributions across all our sites. To inform our plans, we created this vision of how we might collaborate through multimedia by 2016. This scenario was prepared with guidance from community members and is intended for discussion purposes.

Multimedia Vision 2016, presented by Fabrice Florin at a Wikimedia Meetup in San Francisco on Dec. 9, 2013.

How can we make Wikipedia better?

At recent Wikimania conferences, I asked some of our community members for ideas on how to improve the Wikipedia and our free knowledge movement. Their responses were diverse and inspiring -- and we hope to implement some of these ideas in the future.

Here's a short video of what they told us.

I love to develop new products based on ideas from our community. Thanks for the inspiration -- and keep them coming!

Editor Engagement Roundtable

To improve Wikipedia's editor engagement tools with the help of our community, I hosted this roundtable discussion at the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco on June 22, 2013. We brainstormed a variety of new features together, and gained many new insights from these conversations. Learn more about this Roundtable.
