Wikimania research help!

Hi KTo288,

Thanks for your interest in volunteering for Wikimania. Would you be interested in doing some research for us?

We are trying to create pages like this: https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Outreach/Open_Access_Advocates

For each of these subjects:

We're trying to get this done by Monday the 21st of October. Do you have any time between now and then to help work on this?

I'll have a look, I can devote a couple of hours a day, I may not have the compentence to do it all alone but I'm willing to contribute.--KTo288 (talk) 21:28, 7 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Remember what you may lack in background knowledge of the subjects, you'll make up for in terms of wiki fluency - some of the other contributors may just need help processing and organising what they know into wiki format. Any way you can see of improving the structure of the Wikimania wiki would be great. The pages in the "Outreach" section are for wikimedians, I am about to create a mirror set of pages for non-Wikimedians called "Themes", which is basically the same but for an outsiders' perspective. Does that make sense at all? https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Themes EdSaperia (talk) 10:54, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've had a look and there are some things I think I can do, the community here may be a bit small for the wiki ethos of:- "you don't have to know everything and you don't have to do everything yourself, but contribute what you do know and what you can" to work, but I'll give it a go.--KTo288 (talk) 13:20, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Early days, I think. Once the shape of what we're trying to do is clearer, it will become a lot easier to recruit. I'm wary of inviting too many people at this stage, because they may misunderstand the goal. EdSaperia (talk) 12:59, 14 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi KTo288, thanks for getting involved. Can I ask why you've moved quite so much content to the discussion page (particularly on the Educational Reform page)? I think for new visitors it's useful to be able to see a lot of that information on the same page, and the page was not very long. Thanks. - Lawsonstu (talk) 13:43, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've just noticed your comment about this material being more appropriate to page creation rather than page itself. That makes sense, although we want to main page to answer the question 'what can I do to get involved?', so I think some of the content would be better back on the main pages. - Lawsonstu (talk) 14:01, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
No problem, wikis are works in perpertual creation.--KTo288 (talk) 19:40, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just to explain my edits, main space is what we show the world, it should be as polished and clean as possible, be coherent in tone and with an established direction of travel for a reader. The talk page can be a mess of ideas, styles and jump about on topics, its basically what Lawsonstu did with Outreach/Open Access Advocates only the working out got buried in the current page.--KTo288 (talk) 13:29, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
This makes sense, and you could argue that the outreach pages should instead be on the talk pages for the Themes. We're in an odd situation where we're doing outreach planning and outreach side by side, and I'm worried that if they don't know what we're up to, Wikimedians might not realise that the Themes page is a deliberate outreach effort. EdSaperia (talk) 12:52, 14 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think that'll work.--KTo288 (talk) 14:06, 14 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you!

Thanks for getting involved! It's great to have someone more fluent in wiki norms helping with this. Having pages that don't scare off non-wikimedians will be instrumental to our outreach effort. EdSaperia (talk) 12:55, 14 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Edu doc

Hi, someone wrote this for us, do you think you could merge it with the Edu strand? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23210718/EdTech_for_wiki.pdf EdSaperia (talk) 11:09, 17 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
