NOW THAT WIKIPEDIA HAS DONE EVERYONE'S HOMEWORK, WHAT'S LEFT TO TEACH?
Contributing to Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia, Wikiversity and Wikibooks, is an educational opportunity in the fullest sense, developing sophisticated collaboration, scholarly writing and critical thinking skills at the same time as subject knowledge. Improving an article can be a demanding project in either formal and informal education, for a talented student or a whole class.

The Wikimedia Foundation has an extensive set of educator resources, including reasons to use Wikipedia, case studies and teaching materials.

Wikimedia UK is working with some of the country's most respected and innovative institutions to explore how Wikimedia projects can benefit UK education. In partnership with universities and support bodies, we are gradually establishing Wikimedia as part of the landscape of higher education, secondary education, and lifelong learning. more...

YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A HANDBAG... BUT WOULD YOU DOWNLOAD ONE?
If you create something original, you're automatically granted legal ownership over it, which prevents others from reusing it without your permission. Part of the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to encourage people to create and collect content under free licenses, where it can be reused, remixed and shared for any purpose. Wikimedia Commons currently hosts over 19 million multimedia files available for free reuse. A big project called GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) works to encourage cultural institutions to release their content. more...

OPEN ACCESS RESEARCH:
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE CUTTING EDGE OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE IS AVAILABLE TO ALL
Open access is the practise of making scholarly research freely available to the world. Wikimedia shares a similar mission: to provide "the sum of all human knowledge" free to anyone with the means to access the internet. This shared goal is something that will be explored at Wikimania 2014. We believe that the open access community and the Wikimedia community have a lot to offer each other, and by working together we can help open up the world's knowledge. Availability of research is not just about accessibility, but also discoverability. Scholarly articles which are cited in Wikipedia get more traffic and more citations. By adding more references in Wikipedia to open access articles, we can not only increase the spread of this knowledge but perhaps encourage people to read more academic work. more...
