Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

The international OpenGLAM working group consists of active volunteers from a variety of domains that promote the adoption of the OpenGLAM Principles in their respective countries. The Working Group has become the core of the Open Knowledge Foundation's OpenGLAM initiative and meets virtually on a monthly basis to discuss relevant topics, share news and updates and take actions that benefit the adoption of open data and open content in the cultural sector. This has for example resulted in two successful cultural heritage topic streams at the annual conferences organised by the Open Knowledge Foundation, active discussions with a variety of cultural institutions on why and how to open up their data, and recently the OpenGLAM Benchmark Survey was started that aims to get more data about the adoption of open data principles in the heritage sector around the world.

Over the last two years, several national teams have formed, often bringing Wikimedia chapters together with other NGOs and GLAM organisations. The workshop provides an occasion to share experiences and learn from each other by addressing the following points:

  • How do national teams approach the promotion of OpenGLAM and GLAM-Wiki cooperations? What works well? What doesn't?
  • What role has the OpenGLAM Benchmark Survey played so far? (e.g. in terms of new partnerships, team building, exchange of experiences with other countries, etc.)
  • How do national teams plan to employ the survey and its results to promote OpenGLAM?

Target audience:

  • Wikimedians involved or planning to get involved in GLAM outreach
  • Representatives of NGOs, researchers, etc. involved in GLAM outreach
  • Representatives of heritage institutions

Expected output:

A set of concrete ideas how to (better) promote OpenGLAM thanks to the OpenGLAM Benchmark Survey and thanks to teaming up with like-minded partners.

Session structure:

  • Short presentation about the international OpenGLAM Working Group (ca. 5 min)
  • Presentations from 4 countries (5-7 min each)
  • Wrap-up
