- Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)
Workshops to encourage women to participate in Wikipedia have been a great success. They serve multiple purposes: to increase the number of female editors, to increase the number of articles in Wikipedia about women scientists, and to raise the profile of women in science more generally. They can also help to raise the profile of the hosting institution, both as regards their engagement with women in science issues, but also in respect of historical information resources. Since the Royal Society edit-a-thon in 2012 a number of other organisations have hosted such events: Wellcome Trust, British Library, Meducal Research Council (several centres). Each have the same confluence of motivations for hoisting, and each have been very successful as they tap into a tremendous desire and willingness in the population of women scientists to help improve the representation of women scientists in Wikipedia.
This successful model may be reproducible in other situations.
