- What is the impact of Wikipedia Education Programs around the world? To begin to answer this massive question, program leaders have started to collect numbers which can start to tell the story of Wikipedia in Education. Using tools like WikiMetrics and engaging with Wikipedia Education Program leaders and champions around the world, this group hopes to start telling the story with numbers. How many students? How much content on different Wikipedias and on Commons? How active are students during the term -- and do any of them stick around?
- Data we’ll be looking at:
- Number of students; teachers; classes; schools/universities
- amount of content; number of new articles
- editor activity (compared to that language editor community); retention?
- content quality numbers?
- topics students are writing about
- Basic data like this is becoming more and more available for the US and Canada and the Arab world programs. As the Education Cooperative works with other program leaders over the coming months, we will compile and visualize these numbers on a larger scale that includes Nepal, Israel, the UK and others as they become available. This presentation will showcase the importance of collecting and evaluating these numbers. It will also share our methods and rationale. Additionally, it will open up a conversation about evaluation and metrics as we work on ways to do it consistently and better in the future.
