A lot of people come to Wikipedia after they have googled something. Most of the times, the other Wikipedia articles that they read are the ones that they need to read to understand the initial article properly. A problem faced by new editors is that they are not sure of what articles to edit, as a lot of topics on which a lot of people could write the article are already filled up. But a lot of articles like the stub ones need love from editors. The recommendation engine suggests articles to read and edit based on the article that the user is reading. It has a lot of usage apart from just Wikipedia. It could also be used in Wikisource, where we would suggest texts based on the current text.
At first, I will present the use cases for recommendation engine. The use cases, though targeted to readers and new editors can be useful to old and experienced editors as well. The new users would get to know which articles they would like to edit and thus their time on the site would increase.
The recommendations are based on: 1. Categories that include the article. All articles have a list of categories under which they are listed. We first find the articles in the same category and keep on trying to find the articles with maximum number of shared categories. 2. Articles edited by people who edited the concerned article in the concerned categories. This part is also important, as it helps to filter out the articles from the first step. 3. Articles which link to other common Wikipedia articles. These articles are sometimes not in the same category, but usually people with knowledge of the source article would also have a knowledge of articles linked in the article.
