Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

The Open Access Media Importer Bot is a software tool that searches the openly licensed scholarly literature for associated audio and video files and uploads these to Wikimedia Commons. The bot is currently working on just one database - PubMed Central - but designed to be expandable to other databases, to mediatypes other than audiovisual, and to target platforms other than Wikimedia Commons. Over the course of the ca. 2 years of its operation, it has contributed over 15,000 files to Commons, including about one third of all video files there. It also detected multiple issues with the markup that scholarly publishers use to send their content into the database, which turned out to be a significant barrier to reuse.

  1. This tool has uploaded a tremendous amount of valuable content to Wikimedia Commons and the media is already being used in thousands of articles. Everyone should know about this tool and how it brings content from elsewhere into Wikipedia. People who hear about this tool would benefit just from knowing it exists because it explains so much about the nature of Wikipedia. Blue Rasberry (talk) 22:21, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
