Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)
Strengthening the global academic Open Access community will help further the ever expanding limits of human knowledge, the reference base for Wikimedia. While those of us immersed in open cultures can often forget it, there are many academics and policy makers who don’t understand the ideas of open access to scholarly publications, but use tools like wikipedia daily for their work. No one has yet explained the parallels and connections to them, and how increasing the accuracy and referencing within Wikipedia can help them.
Wikipedia has a significant usage at all levels within academia, and the wikimedia communities have unique and invaluable insights and lessons applicable to the open access movement, and this session will discuss how the two different communities should connect together for shared benefit. Open Access is a subset of wikimedia’s mission: ensuring that every single human can freely share in the sum of human (academic) knowledge.
The ambition of the Open Knowledge Foundation’s Free our Research project [website currently pre-launch, contact the proposer for the URL. Will update when available] is to form an interdisciplinary group of people, experts and laymen alike, and produce relevant resources for improved campaigning and stronger Open Access rules across disciplines and the globe. This session will start with a (very) brief introduction of existing work at a grass-roots level, with reference to materials produced after previous events, followed by discussion about and development of practical ways as to how the wikimedia community can help free our research..
